Swoon Magazine's mission is twofold: to showcase and promote local creatives (both up-and-coming as well as established professionals) in NYC and to reclaim fashion as an artistic expression outside of the push to create commercial trends.  We believe photography and fashion, like any other art form, require a space for creative play and experimentation outside of the confines of their respective commercial industries.  Swoon is a political organism as much as it is a party machine, and its politics are this: that glamour can, and must, exist in our daily lives--and you can do it--if not by yourself then with a little bit of help from your friends.  We've come to reclaim the master's tulles.

GUIDELINES

  • Swoon Magazine features NYC-based photographers and independent designers.  All participants, including models, stylists, etc, are from the NYC area as well.
  • Please note that all participation in Swoon Magazine is unpaid.  As our mission statement notes, we strive to provide a forum for experimentation and play outside of the confines of the commercial fashion industry.  Likewise, if you are expecting to reproduce cookie-cutter images along the aesthetic lines of more traditional magazines, perhaps you should re-consider your interest in Swoon.
  • Swoon Magazine generally does NOT consider already finished editorial spreads.  We like to work in conjunction with all of our collaborators to achieve a coherent "Swoon" look, one that is unique for every issue.
  • We are, however, open to pitches if you have an idea for a creating a spread with us. Please come with lots of ideas!
  • For every issue there are several spreads by different photographers featuring local designers. We try to match all participants in a shoot (photographers, models, designers, stylists, etc) who we think would work well to produce fantastic, quality images.
  • All participants (photographers, designers, models, stylists, etc) are carefully screened by our editorial staff for aesthetic compatability. We do not just throw people randomly together. For this reason it's helpful to send us images from your portfolio which are as highly representative of your work as possible (if you do not already have an online portfolio).
  • Swoon Magazine strives to portray a variety of model types, from "real people" to agency models, both young and old.
  • If you have any models/stylists/make-up artists/independent NYC-based designers you've worked with before and would like to feature in your shoot, have them send us photos of their work/access to their portfolio for consideration.
  • All shoots must take place in the NYC area. We are open to location suggestions. We emphasize shooting on location (in setttings unique to New York) as opposed to more controlled studio-based shoots.
  • Swoon Magazine hosts many live events that offer various opportunities to feature your work or shoot live as well. The most notable of these is the Swoon Masquerade Fundraiser, where we produce a live fashion show featuring the work of several selected indie designers. We are always in need of floor photographers, runway photographers, and photobooth/installation/performance photographers.
